Tim Vigil’s Cuda is Back with a Vengeance at Avatar

Legendary artist Timothy Vigil (Faust, 777: The Wrath) returns to one of his earliest creations in September with the release of Cuda #0, an epic 80 page comic from Avatar Press that features the first adventure of Vigil’s barbarian warrior. Literally a decade in the making, this long-lost saga of Cuda’s origin has never been completely revealed – until now.

Cuda’s debut series at Avatar, a four issue tale which concluded earlier this year, had some fans hailing Vigil’s work as one of the most significant events in sword and sorcery comics since Barry Windsor Smith’s efforts on Conan over a quarter century ago. It may surprise readers who first encountered Cuda in that series to know that Vigil’s barbarian has appeared in comics for a decade. Indeed, the barbarian warrior made his debut in the comic that also included the first appearance of The Crow.

“Cuda #0 gives both a great character and a great creator his due,” says Avatar Press editor in chief William A. Christensen. “Fans have been asking for this epic ever since they saw the first mini series. Some had seen a glimpse of it here and there over the years, but now the finished saga can finally be revealed. It’s a self-contained story, and of course it’s his first adventure, so that makes it perfect for current fans and new readers as well.”

“Since Tim has been working on this for over a decade,” Christensen continues, “I’m also quite intrigued by the reaction we’re going to get from readers who are new to his work. Vigil was doing the stunning, intricate line work years before the dawn of the Image era. As Tim continues to blur the boundaries between what’s considered mainstream and indy, I think it’s going to become apparent just how much he has influenced other artists over the past few years.”

Cuda #0 is available for order in July distributor catalogs for a September, 1999 release. Artwork available upon request.
