  • Ennis’ new Avatar comic CROSSED the line – For the main characters of writer Garth Ennis and artist Jacen Burrows’ Avatar Press miniseries CROSSED (see assorted covers below), the end of the world isn’t nigh; it’s already upon them. With the sudden outbreak of a contagion that produces intersecting lines of blemishes on the victims’ faces has come a psychosis that unleashes the afflicted’s most depraved and murderous impulses.

FreakAngels 0037

What was that? Gunfire?

I think most of you probably know Warren Ellis. You’ve read some of his other work, or have heard that he runs the internet from a small pub in the UK. But Paul Duffield is probably a new name to most of you. Here’s Paul in Texas recently on his first trip to America:

If you like Paul’s work on FreakAngels and would like to check out some of his other art, we’ve also put together The Art of Paul Duffield #1. And of particular interest this week is the FreakAngels: Hunting print fresh from a scene in last week’s episode. Of course, Paul has also done a number of covers for Warren’s Anna Mercury series. So keep your eye on Paul, I suspect you’ll be seeing more from him soon.

  • Whitechapel – GRAVEL and Wolfer tackle THE MAJOR SEVEN – Avatar has done a bit of juggling of artist schedules, so there's a small change to be made to the credits in the solicitation text for upcoming issues of GRAVEL. Unfortunately, we're losing Oscar Jiminez as the series artist, as he moves on to another HUGE project, to be announced shortly. I was thrilled with every page and every panel of Oscar's 5-issue run on GRAVEL and his unique style infused the series with an unsurpassed realism.

So what does all this mean?

That's right, beginning with GRAVEL #8 and the new story arc titled, "The Major Seven," I'll be back illustrating interiors! I can't tell you how thrilled I am to once again be drawing the guts of the book (no pun intended). I'll still be co-scripting with Warren, and I'm currently working my ass off to do my best to live up to the reputation of my artistic predecessor. Warren's got some fucking awesome twists coming up, so grab your section of the Sigsand Manuscript and hold on tight. "The Minor Seven" was only a warm-up.

  • COMICS: John Reviews “FreakAngels Vol. 1″ by Warren Ellis and Paul Duffield « WIT WAR – While its role as a webcomic is all well and good, there is much to be said for the print version of FreakAngels. Paul Duffield’s art is gorgeous enough to warrant not just a print version, but a high-quality hardcover. The art looks heavily influenced by more intricately-drawn anime and manga, though I don’t know that medium well enough to determine which particular properties it resembles most. Thank goodness for blogs’ ability to include pictures! Something about Duffield’s illustration (and Alana Yuen’s colors) can make brutal war scenes seem beautiful.
