Lyon, Lugibihl, Al Rio, Marat Mychaels Take Avengelyne to Dark Depths

The avenging angel whose story has taken her from the heights of Heaven down to the base Earth takes a further plunge in Avengelyne: Dark Depths, the latest Avengelyne saga from Avatar Press.  The series will feature the work of several of the industry’s rising stars, including writer Robert Lugibihl (Demonslayer, The Witchfinder), artist Rick Lyon (Pandora, Razor, Avengelyne), and cover artists Al Rio (Gen 13, Exposure), Marat Mychaels (Demonslayer), and Matt Martin (Snowman).  Avengelyne: Dark Depths begins in January from Avatar Press.

“With the addition of several new contributors on this project, the diabolical plan proceeds apace,” notes Avatar editor in chief William Christensen.  “Or should I say the angelic plan.  We set out in the beginning to both take the Earth Angel to new heights with some of the industry’s rising stars, and to do it with that combination of mainstream polish and indy attitude that we do best.  These creators embody those concepts.  Rick Lyon has made a name for himself with his tight pencils on books like Avengelyne, Pandora, and Razor.  Fans have been demanding to see an Avengelyne piece from Matt Martin since we first announced we were publishing the character.  Rio is one of the biggest artistic stars around of course, and the fact that he actually does work means he’s just gonna get bigger.  And Lugibihl and Mychaels have been making some pretty huge waves with Demonslayer.”

Speaking of waves, series scribe Robert Lugibihl observes that Avengelyne is about to dive in and get wet.  “Avengelyne: Dark Depths plunges the avenging angel into an undersea world of gods and monsters,” Lugibihl says.  “When a research team discovers the ancient ruins of Atlantis at the bottom of the Aegean Sea, they inadvertently awaken the lost city’s forgotten monarch and unleash a force of evil that has lain dormant for almost 10,000 years.  Sea creatures are transformed into ravenous, man?eating “manphibians” that terrorize the Greek Islands while an age?old love triangle involving three beings of incredible power threatens to bring about a catastrophe that will wipe out millions.  And who is the mysterious ocean?dwelling nymph known as Coral?”

Avengelyne is the story of a fallen angel who must atone for her sins by experiencing the dangers of the human world as a mortal woman.   Avengelyne: Dark Depths will mark the third project from Avatar Press featuring the popular Earth Angel since the publisher began chronicling her tales with Avengelyne: Bad Blood this summer.  The company has carved a niche for itself as a publisher that pushes the boundaries between mainstream and independent with titles such as Warren Ellis’ Stranger Kisses, Exposure by Al Rio, Mike Deodato’s Jade Warriors, and Quinn and Vigil’s Faust.  Now in its fourth year, Avatar has published nearly 250 comic books since 1997.

Avengelyne: Dark Depths is a two issue mini-series with a special issue ½ prelude story beginning in January 2001 from Avatar Press.  The full color series will be drawn by Rick Lyon and written by Robert Lugibihl, with covers on the project provided by Al Rio, Marat Mychaels, Matt Martin, Patrick Fillion, Lloyd, and Rick Lyon.  For more information, email info@avatarpress.net or see our web site at www.avatarpress.com.
