New This Week: CALIGULA #6 and CROSSED: PSYCHOPATH #7

by Keith Davidsen on January 18, 2012

It’s a banner week for David Lapham. Two of the most horrific, spine-tingling comic series of all time are coming to an end, both with the twists and turns you’d come to expect from a writer of his caliber.  Thank goodness FERALS has just started, filling in the void we’d otherwise feel after his departure from CALIGULA #6 and CROSSED: PSYCHOPATH #7!

In CALIGULA #6, the streets of Rome run red with blood as Lapham brings the story of the most feared emperor of all time to its startling conclusion to! Junius has endured the brutal slaughter of his parents, the savage needs of a demonic steed, and the maddened ravings of his beloved and despised enemy (a complex relationship, to be sure). Having been tasked to record the gospel of Caligula, to witness his perverse and murderous deeds and record them for posterity, can this fragile mortal man decipher the supernatural secrets of Rome’s most despised despot and put an end to the insanity? What would it take to kill a man who cannot die?

David Lapham drags fans into the darkest corners of Rome’s history and dares you to stare down the madness within. German Nobile illustrates this final gruesome chapter in the CALIGULA epic. Issue #6 is available with a Regular cover by Jacen Burrows and a Wraparound cover by series artist German Nobile. (Retailers are also eligible to receive a special Golden Age of Rome edition, although availability varies by location).

Also in stores today, you’ll be able to find CROSSED: PSYCHOPATH #7. It’s all come down to this, folks! Harold Lorre was a despicable excuse for a man before the collapse of civilization, but his sick desires and deadly manipulations have reached levels that would inspire awe and envy even in the Crossed themselves! And now, in the final issue of PSYCHOPATH, his cat-and-mouse game with beautiful, strong-willed Amanda finally comes to an end. This is gruesome psychological terror at its most intense! To paraphrase the CROSSED catch phrase: Is there hope? Is there escape? If there is only to be one left remaining, who will it be, and what will be left of him or her?

The highly detailed and spine-chilling illustrations of Raulo Caceres (CAPTAIN SWING, CRECY) perfectly bring the terrors from inside David Lapham’s head right to the comic page!  CROSSED: PSYCHOPATH #7 has three standard cover variants in stores today, with a Regular edition by Jacen Burrows and Torture and Wraparound editions by Raulo Caceres. (Retailers are also eligible to receive a special Red Crossed edition, although availability varies by location).

Crossed #7 is brilliant, You had me speechless.

What a terrific book and my favorite arc to date! Lapham has done fine work with Crossed, becoming better and better as he goes. But he really outdid himself here, i was glued to the dialog. i was fighting my fingers from turning the pages too fast for my eyes to soak up Raulo’s artwork. It easy to blow though a comic nowadays, but it must have taken me close to a half hour to digest this book. i wanted it all at the same time, every detail and crevice along with the voices of the characters. and then !BAM! fucking action and violence all raging in my senses to absorb.
i like that the first and opening page is plain, but as soon as we turn the page the inspired layouts begin. Then on the very next page, im given a “Creepy” Bernie Wrightson vibe off a dismembered breast! The angles Raulo works, in combination with those layouts are just incredible. it hits me again and again as ive gone thru the series. And then, Finally like revelation, a Crossed conversion scene!  However, the scene of Lori’s true fate (as amazing as it is!) pushed me over the edge. Still, its good to know my sick mind isnt terminally rotted. But then again right before the end, that stitching page just shows how sweet and stylish the artist can work it.

i also want to make a comment about the colors this issue in that it feels warmer and a bit brighter. i wonder if that is an intentional lift against the darkness and gloom of previous issues? a bit of pleasantness, in a way, that plays against the coming violence and gore of the final pages of the story. intentional or not, very nice work. I will have to comare this to other issues, but the colors are very nice.

holy crap,, ive gotta stop before i write a page of spoilers.
Amazing stuff people, As much as i bitch about paying $4 nowadays id pay double for this issue. Hell, im out to go buy another copy.
Keep up the great work, and Thank you.

I have just finished reading Crossed: Psychopath #7 and the rush and shock is still tingling through me. The entire series has been a whirlpool of a ride. And that wasn’t enough I still have the final issue of Caligula to contend with. David Lapham and company are doing exceptional work here.

I actually really hated Psychopath #7. I feel it ended way before it should have, absolutely nothing was resolved, Harold is just as batshit crazy as we’ve known he was all along, and there’s not even a proper ending. Glad I didn’t purchase this issue and just decided to read the entire thing in store. Severely disappointed after enjoying the rest of the story arc.

Awesome book. I do agree that the ending was disappointing and a bit lazy/rushed. Maybe we’ll see harrold lore in a future crossed installment?

  • Qpierce413

Apparently Ennis is strongly against revisiting characters, but i wonder if the same is true for Lapham? This may be an overall editorial/Avatar ruling about Crossed in general, or maybe it depends on the writer.
As much as i love this arc, i would have to agree that leaving them both alive feels odd. I can imagine a lot more that can be done with Harrold, and id love to see Amanda again. but if there is a rule against reoccurring characters, Then it would have been good to see them resolved by the end of issue #7. I dont feel it was “rushed”, but maybe a bit open ended.

either way, this was an amazing issue IMO.
