Creed Proceeds to Avatar

Sept. 22 1997, Urbana, IL – Avatar Press, Inc. announced today that the publisher has reached an agreement with Creed creator Trent Kaniuga to publish the artist/writer’s highly regarded independent title.  Creed will launch under the Avatar banner in January 1998.

“Trent has proven himself to be one of the brightest stars of the post-Image era,” says Avatar Press Editor-in-Chief William A. Christensen.  “And Creed has been one of the biggest indy comic hits of the past few years.  I’m very pleased to be working with Trent, and I think we have the ability and resources to help him take Creed to the next level.”

“Their commitment to the book was my main reason for going with Avatar,” explains Creed creator Kaniuga. “With the creator-owned titles they publish, they bring the same enthusiasm to production, publishing, and marketing that the creator does in creating.  I can relax and concentrate on doing my job, knowing that the book is in good hands.”

Kaniuga made his debut in comics in 1993 with Deadbolt from publisher Hall of Heroes.  He launched Creed the following year at Hall of Heroes and took the property to publisher Lightning in 1995.  The title has also been the subject of both trading cards and action figures.

Avatar Press was founded in 1996 to publish innovative, quality comics for the mainstream market.  Avatar publishes other successful creator-owned titles such as Snowman, Nira X, Widow, and Donna Mia.  The publisher’s company-owned titles include popular characters such as Pandora and The Ravening.

Creed #1 will be available for order in November 1997 and will ship in January 1998.  Avatar will support the launch of Creed with distributor catalog advertising, house ads, and targeted promotional mailings, as well as extensive coverage on its web site at http://www.avatarpress.com.
