Gallery: 777 The Wrath by Tim Vigil
We took a look back at Cuda a couple weeks ago, and here's another look at a classic Tim Vigil piece -- the cover of 777: The Wrath #1. This March 1998 release proved to be one of Avatar's pivotal moments, as it became Avatar's biggest hit up to that time and solidified the publisher's position as one of the premier outlets of creator-owned projects in comics -- the company had already published Matt Martin's Snowman and Mike Wolfer's Widow, among numerous others, at that time.
777 also marked a reunion of sorts for David Quinn and Tim Vigil. While both creators were fairly prolific in their individual endeavors, they had previously only collaborated on Faust: Love of the Damned -- arguably one of the most notorious titles in the history of American comics for its unflinching approach to adult, sophisticated themes, and Vigil's explosive visual imagination. 777 proved conclusively that the duo can still conjure that old black magic.
The original solicitation for the issue read in part: What happens when Man gets stood up by Armageddon? If God's Wrath isn't coming, then someone else will have to do it the hard way. Taking place over several intense nights, 777: The Wrath is a unapologetically dark, brutal violent crime story from one of the most influential creative teams in independent comics. It dramatizes the trajectory of a tragic hero who stands with one foot in the domain of angels and the other lodged in the cesspool of humanity. With his body slowly falling apart, our hero must strike with all the fury he possesses trying to escape the inevitable fact that he will get no justice, no peace.
The 777: The Wrath box set is becoming available again from stores nationwide in July.
